1966-67 Wilt finally beats Russell
Wilt Finally Bests Russell. Boston's era would come to an end, and
another club would come into the spotlight. The 76ers, which with coach Alex
Hannum, set a new NBA, winning 68-13 games. record. Chet Walker and Billy
Cunningham focused on scoring as Wilt Chamberlain concentrated on rebounding and
defense, which, of course, didn't stop him from finishing third in scoring
(24.1), first in rebounding (24.2), and third in assists (7.8).
The Chicago Bulls emerged for the first time, and the Baltimore Bullets were
moved to the Eastern Division. The league changed its structure, now two
divisions with 5 teams each. On its way to the Finals, Philadelphia eliminated
Cincinnati (3-0), and Boston (4-1). The game against San Francisco ended in a
4-2 victory for 76ers. Even a scoring leader, Rick Barry (average 35.6ppg)
couldn't help the Warriors. Chamberlain had his championship, but without the
scoring title.
After so many years of losing to the Celtics, the 76ers needed a nearly
ideal season to finally become the Champions.
