1954-55 - 24-second shot clock saves league
Two big events in NBA history occurred in this season. George Mikan announced
his retirement, althought propably more important was the intruduction of the
24-second clock limiting the time for taking a shot. Danny Biasone, owner and
manger of Seracuse team, and Leo Ferris came up with the shot clock idea, which
along with the team foul limit created the framework of the the pro basketball
we know today.
The results were visible imediately, scoring sprung up from 79.5 to 93.1ppg
spreading the points accross the team, which didn't soar the avverage of the
best players. Neil Johnston won another scoring title by averaging 22.7 ppg,
while, just behind him was Bob Cousy with 21.2 ppg and Paul Arizin, with
21.0.With Mikan departure, Syracuse Nationals faced a great opportunity. They
didn't was it and defeatedFort Wayne 4-3 in the Finals winning the first title
for the city.
Biastone 's idea rescued the league and placed him in NBA history. It was one of
those ideas which worked immediately, completely and effectively. It was what
the basketball needed.
