1947-48 - New Team from Baltimore Steels Crown
1947-48 - New Team from Baltimore Steels Crown
When the second season began, several changes had taken place. The league
schedule was reduced from 60 to 48 games to minimalize travel expenses. Four
teams from the original 11 had departed. They were Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto
and Pittsburgh. In an attempt to fix the unbalanced schedule problem, the
Baltimore Bullets had previously played in the ABA league were invited in. To
the surprise of many, Baltimore showed that it was not worse and won the title
in six games over Philadelphia. The Baltimore team featured Buddy Jeannette
(both coach and player), Clarence Hermsen, Chick Reiser, and Paul Hoffman and
Connie Simmons. Max Zaslofsky was the only player who scored more than 1000
points, and won the scoring title. over Joe Fulks when the Philadelphia star
missed five games. The league, which lost a lot in revenues through the
reduction in games got a good deal of experience brought by Joe Lapchick, who
had played for the Celtics and coached at St. John's and later became a coach of
the Knicks. The games were rough and brutal, but very often the players
finalized their victories and defeats together with a crane of beer.
