1946-47 – Fulks's star is shining in the new BAA season
In the first season of the BAA, a new star emerged, Joe Fulks, a forward from
Kentucky, averaged 23.2 ppg at the time when teams scored in the 70s and 80s on
average and only a few points per game. His score was 7 points higher than that
of any other player in the league. Field goal percentages were in the 30 percent
range at that time, and Ernest Calverley led the league with 3.4 assists per
game. Other stars of the season were Bob Feerick and Bones McKinney, both from
Washington, Detroit's Stan Miasek and Chicago's Max Zaslofsky. The 60-game
season belonged to the Washington Capitols, coached by Red Auerbach with the
following statistics: a 49-11 record, including a 29-1 mark at home. In the
Playoffs, however, Chicago beat the Capitols and advanced to the Finals.
Philadelphia, the second finalist, coached by Eddie Gottlieb, defeated St. Louis
and New York to advance to the Finals. Fulks, Howie Dallmar and Angelo Musi led
Philadelphia past Chicago as the Warriors won the first league title 4-1. The
debut of the season was not easy. There was not a big bang in the media,
different teams had to share their buildings with other pro teams. The Finals
games were sold out in full, and the victorious Warriors pocketed about $2,000
per player in prize money, which constituted almost half a season's pay for most
of them.
