Las Vegas Roulette Rules
Roulette comes from the French term meaning "small wheel". Variations of this
game have been around for millennia. Legend has it that Roman soldiers tipped
their chariots over to play on the spinning wheel as a kind of diversion between
theircampaigns. Still others say that monks brought this game from China in the
Middle Ages. Roulette became popular in Europe during the 18th and 19th
centuries, especially in France and Monte Carlo.
Today, the roulette wheel is the most recognized sybmol of the glamour,
excitement and prestige of high-class casino gambling.
American Roulette wheel is divided into 38 evenly spaced slots that are
numbered 0, 00, and 1 through 36. The zero slots are green and the rest of the
numbers are either red or black. The evenly balanced wheel, which is usually
made of polished wood, turns on a spindle. The dealer spins the wheel in one
direction and releases a small ball made of ivory in the opposite direction,
where it circles many times before slowing down. As the ball loses its momentum
it falls into one of the slots. It may bounce around from slot to slot but in
the end it settles into one of them to end the round.
The fascination of the game comes from the many ways a player can place a bet
and the excitement and anticipation of watching the ball fall into a random
slot.
